The Time Capsule is a leisure facility like no other. Inside the centre that dubs itself Scotland’s waterpark, there is an entire universe of aquatic entertainment to be had. With its industrial decor and futuristic flourishes, The Time Capsule certainly lives up to its name. A firm family favourite, the waterpark boasts a 25-metre swimming pool, sauna, steam room, ice rink and kids’ play zone. And that’s just for starters – ever since the Coatbridge complex was treated to an extensive refurbishment, there’s been twice as much fun for everyone. Open till late seven days a week, The Time Capsule does a roaring trade during school holidays and on weekends. The swimming area, with its water slides, flumes and play pools galore, is the first port of call for most kids adventuring here. With zones like Splashdown Island, Coral Cove and Tornado Tantrum waiting to be discovered, it’s safe to say the kids won’t be running out of things to do any time soon. To provide a sense of scale, Splashdown Island’s tipping water bucket holds 2,000 litres of water, which is then emptied onto the gleeful public over 70 times a day. Ride the 10-metre high Storm Chasers, Thunder and Lightning; with their twisting twin flumes, they’re not for the faint-hearted. Measuring 100 metres combined, the flumes take anywhere between ten and 30 seconds to ride depending on the weight of the individual. Riptide River moves at a slower pace, before fiendishly speeding up as it nears its climax. Cove Island, meanwhile, offers a safe haven for young kids, with its shallow water and ample shelter. If keeping up with the kids seems like too much hard work, parents can relax with a coffee and a bite to eat in the adjacent Beach Bar. With a gymnasium, fitness club and spa also onsite, there’s enough here to keep everyone occupied.
